Computer Lab Seating Assignments Made Easy

Most of us will be heading back to school in about a month. Are you ready? Have you heard the old saying "You don't have to be just have to look ready!"? Here is one way to look and be ready. When I get my class lists I print up colored tags for each grade with each students name on one. I then attach them to the top of computer monitors with sticky tack. This way they can be moved easily if you want to move a student. It also leaves no sticky residue on the monitor.

The Perfect Typing Program--Just $10!

The perfect typing program is hard to come by. Especially one that can be used for students in 5th through 8th grade. I like to use a combination and do just that. I find that students get bored with the same program month after month, year after year. For younger students, such as those in 3rd or 4th grade, I use the online "Dance Mat Typing" provided for free from the BBC's website. By 5th grade, kids are ready for something more. I have used various software programs that are quite costly...having to buy a classroom license. They are effective for awhile, but there is that cost, and students get bored. So, this past year, I started creating some short typing activities in Microsoft Word, applying and monitoring them in the classroom, and getting students' feedback about what they liked and didn't like. Hence, a new typing program is in creation as we speak. A program that only requires Microsoft Word. There will be no licensing fees...just a small price tag to buy one downloadable copy to use on as many computers as you like. So, stay tuned...I should be done in a week or two...just in time for the start of school!

The energy of those I live with is being distributed outside the house this morning...leaving me with some quality quiet time to work on a lesson plan I have been trying to finish. Today I am working on an activity named "Animal Alphabet Keyboard Recognition Activity" for grades K-3. It has been challenging to find an animal that starts with each letter of the alphabet! Do you think I can get away with U for unicorn? And, did you ever hear of a Xerus? It's an African ground squirrel. Yeah, I'm sure all of you knew that. It's a new word for my vocabulary...ya learn something new everyday.

Just in case you are the curious type and want to watch a Xerus in action...

Hi and thanks for checking in on my blog!

Summer is here and, like many teachers, I am using some of my "days off" planning and improving lessons for the upcoming school year. Reorganizing my workspace at home has given me some inspiration and a boost to work on making existing lesson plans ready for publication as well as coming up with new ideas.

I invite you to follow me and share your thoughts along the way.

Happy summering everyone!
